HUDSON VALLEY FIBER ARTS HAPPENINGS

The Perfect Blend Yarn and Tea Shop celebrates the melting of the snow, the anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day and the arrival of spring by holding a Green sale, everything green is 15% off (except consignment pieces). Through Mar. 17, 2015. 50 Market Street, Saugerties, NY; 845-246-2876.
2015 Agricultural Literacy Week begins Monday, March 16 and runs through Friday, March 20th. According to their website, http://www.agclassroom.org/ny/programs/literacy.htm
Here are some of the events we've heard of:
An Ag Literacy Week kick-off will take place with a reading of the book, “Weaving the Rainbow,” among the lambs at Ben Wever Farm, 2 pm on Sat. Mar. 14, 2015. 444 Mountain View Dr., Willsboro, NY 12996. Please call ahead to RSVP, 518-963-7447. Then there will be a reading of the book at 14 schools in Essex County during Ag Literacy week.
In Delaware County, volunteers will read to second grade classes and others in eight schools. Activities will be determined by the readers.
Here's more info on the program:
"In celebration of New York agriculture, volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. Students and teachers will also benefit from hands-on lessons and receive follow up activities. The book will be donated to the school or classroom library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Agricultural Literacy Week. 2,000 books were donated last year while thousands of second graders participated in fun and educational activities.
"The signature book for 2015 is Weaving the Rainbow by George Ella Lyon and illustrated by Stephanie Anderson. In this beautiful story a young girl leads the reader through the process of raising and caring for animals, with the end result of using their well-cared for fleece as the medium for her weaved artwork. Students will see the steps of shearing, carding, spinning, dying before she can to make a beautiful tapestry.
"Fiber production, whether from sheep, goats, alpacas, or rabbits, is an important agricultural industry in New York State. The farmers who produce these animals must maintain proper nutrition and management of their flocks to ensure the best quality fleeces and end-result products. Fiber animals are often used as multi-purpose animals and also raised for their meat and milk. Agriculture is not always what we eat, but also what we wear. All lesson, activities, learning extensions, and companion resources are aligned to New York State and Common Core Learning Standards."
