Thistle Hill Weavers announced the presenters for the Textile History Forum, Aug. 1 - 3, 2025 at Kate Smith's Weavers Croft in Marshfield, VT.
For the list of presenters:
Textile History Forum
The textile History Forum is a bi-annual celebration of the study of textiles, and uniquely offers a place for academics and non-academics alike to share and discuss their pursuits and investigations.
The keynote speaker will be Michael Nix, British historian and author of 'Norwich Textiles: A Global Study 1750-1840.'
Upcoming Workshops at Thistle Hill Weavers, Cherry Valley, NY:
Design and Drafting Patterns for Handweavers, Re-scheduled dates - May 10 & 11, 2025. $125. Lunch and all materials included. Limited to 6 students.
This class is a class on why weaving works and how to design patterns using several different weave structures. This is a pencil and paper class not a weaving course.
The class will begin by an understanding the three basic weave structures and their uses. Then a look at the formulas for several familiar pattern weaves: M's and O's, spot weave, twill blocks, float work, summer and winter, and double cloth blocks. Then students will design two and three block patterns of their own in different weave structures.
Rabbit Goody of Thistle Hill Weavers will teach a workshop: Spin Span Spun: Spinning Straw into Gold or Spinning on traditional spinning wheels at Historic Eastfield Village, East Nassau, NY, June 21 & 22, 2025.
This workshop is geared to folks who are already familiar with spinning but want to improve their knowledge of traditional spinning techniques and care of traditional wheels. It is also open to folks who are interested in flax fiber preparation. Part of the class will involve dressing flax fiber for spinning with traditional distaffs. This workshop is an opportunity to get the students' traditional wheels working. The class will go over maintenance, care, and repair of traditional low and great wheels. The goal of the workshop will be to get many traditional wheels in working condition as possible.
The Textile History Forum will be held August 1 - 3, 2025, at The Weaver's Croft and Eaton Hill Textiles, Marshfield, VT. The keynote speaker will be British historian, Michael Nix, author of Norwich Textiles: A Global Story 1750-1840.
The forum is a bi-annual, scholarly, but non-academic meeting to encourage new voices to discuss old materials and process. The forum is still accepting proposals for submissions from academics and non-academics alike. Submissions may include papers, presentations and works-in-progress. Papers are printed in the Forum's Proceedings and dispersed on the day of, so presenters are encouraged to not read their papers, but to discuss the process, raise questions and lead an interactive presentation of their papers.
